Purists are right to compare this watering hole unfavorably to its original incarnation, which was an endearing but irretrievably filthy dive. This Madhatter is perfectly clean, and even offers a very passable menu of dirt-cheap pub grub during the day. The spirit of the old days lives on at night, when alternative rock blasts at near-painful levels, the shooter girl plies her trade and cheap domestic pitchers seem to magically appear on tables. The most impressive transplant, however, is the uncommon sense of come-as-you-are good cheer.
Brutopia, a cozy brewpub is completely unlike the slick clubs and discos that surround it. The bar is three storeyed and you won't find much dancing or schmoozing at this friendly and conversational pub, which is decked out in exposed brick and hardwood. There are three terraces and you can enjoy there amazing brews in the open. There is also a stage for occasional live music. The place serves delicious tapas dishes and the menu is globally inspired. Stop by on Fridays, the only day serving lunch, and enjoy happy hours full day on Monday and from 8p on other days.
Being in the heart of Montreal's bar scene makes good sense for this Irish haven. Folks come for imported draft beer from the old country and the ultra pubby atmosphere, which is set in a beautiful stone building with several working fireplaces. Most of the warmth comes from the live traditional Celtic music, Irish whiskeys and highland single malts. A solid pub grub menu is offered as well (Bookie's Special steak sandwich on baguette). The clientele is made up mostly of locals, but outsiders are more than welcome and are quickly accepted into the clan.
With it's live entertainment that ranges from eclectic music performances, jam nights, trivia nights, and open mic nights, there's something about Grumpy's Bar that will make almost anyone want to flaunt a satisfied smile. Housed within a heritage building, and a well-equipped bar, Grumpy's is all the refuge you need on a rainy night in the city. The archaic feel of the ambiance, the friendly crowd, and the lilting music in the background makes this an ideal place to enjoy a drink on your own, chill with buddies, or even meet new people. Irish Embassy is a large downtown pub & grill, offering a standard array of brews and a menu of classic Irish and Canadian dishes. Equally as good for dinner as it is for a night out, Irish Embassy supports a mixed clientele of students and professionals. The pub's classic, dark, wood interior is broken open in the summertime by two sizable terraces in both the front and the rear of the building. The back of the restaurant is often opened up completely to the outdoors via a garage-style rear wall. Live music from excellent local bands often complete a night at Irish Embassy.
